Many times, custom is used to reference any form of customization. Often it just refers to a version of a base plan. It often means picking which dark quartz you want on your waterfall island. The builder produces three palettes based on your Pinterest board and inspiration photos. From there, you can “custom”-ize your home.
That is a wonderful way to build a house. Designer homes require a lot less customer involvement in selections, function, flow, and feel while still delivering a beautiful result. They are gorgeous homes that can be personalized in the way you find most attractive.
A custom home, on the other hand, is one that you help shape from the ground up. It requires time for the builder and designer to get to know you and understand the way you want to live in your home. Understanding the difference between the two, and which one fits you better, will help your home-building journey be a success regardless of the builder you choose to work with.
Designer Homes
These houses look fantastic and are an impressive sight to behold. They typically can be built a bit quicker and, depending on the scope, are generally cheaper. They typically are a stock set of plans that have been curated over time and are well thought through. The floor plans are pre-developed and ready for your palette.
Typically there are pre-compiled finish packages and you choose your level of finish. It helps simplify the decision-making process as you are given a standard set of options to review, or in some cases you are presented with a palette based on your inspiration photos. You simply approve or request changes and refine the palette.
These homes are a great fit for people who are in a hurry, are fine with a well thought-through and more typical floor plan, and do not want to spend as much time learning about all the options available or making the many decisions involved in shaping a custom home.
Truly Custom Homes
A well-built and truly custom home should fit you like a well-tailored suit or a pair of molded skates. It should be a pleasure to live in because it thoughtfully reflects you and your lifestyle. It can even solve pain points you did not realize you had because it simply fits.
A custom home does require more investment of energy to ensure that every room turns out the way you want. It means taking trips to tile stores (great place to lean on a designer to come with you and help guide you) and picking out the tiles that call out to you. Going into the project understanding what you want and informing your builder so they get it too will result in far more meaningful collaboration. It is not uncommon to find that you start off wanting to have everything picked for you, and then discovering along the way that you want to be more involved in selections than you originally expected. This is okay too, and it is easier to walk the journey together with your builder towards that conclusion than to be trying to drag each other to your understanding the entire time.
